The National Labour Congress (NLC) dismissed widespread rumors of an imminent nationwide strike scheduled for Monday, December 18, labeling the reports as “fake news.”

Benson Upah, the Head of Information and Public Affairs for the NLC, refuted claims that the union intended to embark on industrial action, urging Nigerian workers to disregard the circulating information.

Addressing the media, Upah clarified, “It has been brought to our attention a notice of a strike action… We want to reassure Nigerians that this notice did not emanate from us, and neither do we have any intention of initiating any strike action during this period. Accordingly, concerned Nigerians are advised to ignore this notice. It is fake.”

The controversy stemmed from earlier reports that hinted at the NLC’s planned strike due to the World Bank’s purported proposal to raise fuel prices to N750 per liter.

However, Upah firmly denied issuing any warning to the federal government and stressed that the labor union harbored no intentions to commence a strike on Monday.

“Any such warning was not issued by us,” Upah reiterated, dispelling the notion of impending industrial action. He urged citizens to disregard the news, categorically terming it as “fake news.”

This clarification comes amid growing concerns and speculation surrounding the alleged fuel price hike and its potential repercussions on the Nigerian workforce.

Despite the fervent circulation of strike-related reports, the NLC remains resolute in dispelling any notion of imminent industrial action.
