The strike is not unconnected to the Federal Government’s removal of fuel subsidy and the subsequent hike in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit better known as petrol.

The Nigeria National Petroleum Company (NNPC) on Wednesday released a new price template for its retail outlets which reflected an increase in the pump price of petrol.

The NLC president, Joe Ajero said the NNPC had up until Wednesday, next week (June 7, 2023) to revert to the old price.

The union had issued a statement kicking against the decision of the government to remove the subsidy on petrol without putting alternative measures on the ground to cushion the effects on Nigerians.

NLC president, Joe Ajero and president of Trade Union Congress, Festus Usifo on Wednesday, had a meeting with representatives of the Federal Government, which was said to have ended in deadlock as the Labour unions did not agree to what the Government brought to the table.

Ajaero added that if the Federal Government didn’t comply with the deadline, there would be infinite nationwide protests.
