The internet penetration in Nigeria at 51% is by far one of the largest in Africa. In 2022 alone, there has been an increase in the demand for companies that have indicated an interest in operating in this segment of the telecommunications industry.

Nigeria is currently looking to increase its current 51% penetration to 70% by 2025, which means there’s a need for more Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to achieve the target of 70% broadband penetration.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) licensed over 40 new Internet Service Providers (ISPs), including Elon Musk’s Starlink. Which has increased the number of ISPs to a total of 238 as of December 2022.

However, it is important to note that These ISPs have a specific consumer base different from the mobile network operators of MTN, Airtel, Globacom, and 9mobile. These ISPs are serving mainly corporate organizations and homes and do not have an all-encompassing market reach like the mobile network operators.

This is why ISPs have a significantly lower market share than MNOs. As of Q3 2022, the total connected subscribers of the ISPs stood at 415,099, according to the data released by the NCC. However, only 49% of these subscribers, 204,810, were active.

Nevertheless, it doesn’t take away from the fact that these ISPs have done tremendously well and have recorded impressive subscription figures As of Q3 2022.

Below are the top 10 ISPs according to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
