Condemnation from the Lithuanian Football Federation
The Lithuanian Football Federation (LFF) denounced the attack, describing it as a “blatant act of racism” that tarnishes the reputation of both football and the country.
“What occurred in Alytus surpasses the bounds of human decency,” the federation said in a statement. “Obi is not just a footballer but a young professional striving to build a career, contributing to his team’s successes. Attacks like this send a troubling signal to the global football community and are unacceptable in any context.”
LFF President Edgaras Stankevičius also spoke out, emphasising the federation’s zero-tolerance stance. “Racism has no place in football or society. Players, irrespective of nationality or skin colour, must feel safe and focus on what they do best delighting fans on the pitch. Football should unite people, not divide them,” he said.
Career Disruption
The attack abruptly interrupts Obi’s European journey, adding to a growing list of African players facing racial abuse abroad.
It has reignited debates about the effectiveness of anti-racism measures in European football, with calls for stricter protection for foreign athletes and accountability for perpetrators.
As Obi continues his treatment, football authorities and fans alike are watching closely, hoping the incident prompts both justice for the victim and stronger safeguards to prevent similar attacks in the future.
