Nigeria To Produce Homegrown Military Hardware As Vinicius Opens Defence Plant In Abuja

August 9, 2025

In a move poised to transform Africa’s security supply chain, Vinicius International has officially opened a locally based defence hardware manufacturing plant in Abuja. The newly licensed facility, operating under DICON, will assemble armoured vehicles and deploy advanced surveillance systems projects that signal a strategic shift away from the continent’s heavy reliance on imported military equipment .

Vinicius International, a proudly Nigerian conglomerate headquartered in Jabi, Abuja, brings decades of experience across security, construction, aviation, agro-trade, and tech-driven sectors. Having already supplied over 300 armoured vehicles to Nigerian security forces in early 2024, the company is now poised to scale operations in its new facility .

For decades, Africa’s military spending has skyrocketed, reaching $51.6 billion in 2023. However, the continued importation of more than 95% of its defence hardware has exposed national security operations to supply chain risks and geopolitical shifts. Local production in Abuja promises faster and more reliable access to critical systems tailored to regional needs, enabling quicker responses to the continent’s increasingly complex security threats.

This venture is expected to stimulate job creation, technical upskilling, and economic retention value previously lost to foreign suppliers. Through its Advanced Security Command and Control (ASCC) division, Vinicius will also train local personnel in operating and maintaining advanced systems, strengthening both capacity and sovereignty .

Strategically positioned at the heart of West Africa, the plant is envisioned as a regional manufacturing hub. Its potential to serve neighboring nations within an emerging African defence supply network offers a collective security and economic opportunity never before realized .

Saifullahi Babangida, Group CEO, described the facility as “a turning point for Africa’s defence capacity,” emphasizing sovereignty, job creation, and indigenous innovation as core objectives .

With the Abuja facility now operational, Nigeria is not just importing protection – it is building it, a shift that could redefine the country’s role in both regional security and the global defense economy.
