In a meeting at the NCC headquarters in Abuja, Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of NCC, reassured Meta (formerly Facebook) of the commission’s support for their 2Africa Cable initiative, aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s digital infrastructure.

“Support will be extended to law-abiding investors like Meta, fostering our government’s agenda for a robust digital economy,” Dr. Maida affirmed during discussions with Kojo Boakye, Meta’s Vice President for Africa, the Middle-East, and Turkey.

Stressing the significance of compliance with industry laws and regulations, Dr. Maida emphasized the commission’s commitment to creating a level playing field for all stakeholders, ensuring healthy competition and sustainable growth in the telecoms sector.

Boakye detailed the scope of the 2Africa Cable project, a 45,000-kilometer-long subsea cable connecting Europe, Asia, and Africa, set to revolutionize connectivity with a design capacity of up to 180 terabytes per second (Tbps) and scheduled to go live in 2023.

Expressing Meta’s intention to land the cable simultaneously in Lagos and Akwa-Ibom states, Boakye highlighted the cable’s potential to bridge the digital divide, offering improved access and affordability to millions of people in Nigeria and across Africa.

Requesting support from the NCC to navigate legal and regulatory challenges, Boakye emphasized, “The 2Africa Cable is pivotal in ensuring connectivity for the unconnected and bolstering access for those already linked.”

The meeting concluded with mutual optimism and a shared commitment to advancing Nigeria’s digital landscape through this groundbreaking initiative by Meta.
