Mr Ibu’s Death: Timeline Of His Illness That Cost Him His Leg

The Nigerian entertainment industry mourns the loss of one of its beloved actors, John ‘Mr Ibu’ Okafor, whose final months were marred by battles against life threaten illness.

Mr Ibu’s health struggles came to public attention in October 2023 when he shared a video from his hospital room, celebrating his 62nd birthday. Dressed in a hospital gown and with a visibly swollen left leg, he expressed gratitude for another year of life amidst his health challenges.

Just a day after his birthday, Mr Ibu and his family made a call for financial assistance to cover his medical expenses. With doctors recommending the amputation of his leg to save his life, the actor faced a daunting choice. “If they cut off my leg, where will I go to? I don’t want my leg to be cut off,” he lamented, reflecting the gravity of his situation.

Despite the challenges, Mr Ibu underwent multiple surgeries in late October, raising hopes for his recovery. However, the need for further interventions became apparent as his health deteriorated. In November, his family announced the news that one of his legs had been amputated in a desperate attempt to prolong his life.

Throughout his ordeal, Mr Ibu’s family provided regular updates, dispelling rumours and clarifying misconceptions about his condition.

Contrary to speculation, he was not battling diabetes but faced constant clotting of the blood vessels in his leg, alongside other health complications. Despite initial plans for overseas treatment, medical experts deemed him unfit to travel, emphazing the severity of his illness.

As months passed with little improvement in his condition, the news of Mr Ibu’s passing on March 2, 2024, sent shock throughout the entertainment industry. The loss of the veteran actor, known for his comedic brilliance, left a void that will be felt by fans and colleagues.

In commemorating Mr Ibu’s life and career, tributes poured in from across Nigeria, celebrating his four-decade-long contribution to Nollywood.
