A 31-year-old California man has been arraigned in connection with the April 25 shooting incident that disrupted the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, in what U.S. authorities describe as an attempted assassination plot targeting President Donald Trump.
The suspect, Cole Tomas Allen, of Torrance, California, appeared in a U.S. District Court on multiple federal charges, including attempted assassination of the President of the United States, transporting firearms across state lines with intent to commit a felony, and discharging a firearm.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Allen allegedly travelled across the country armed with weapons and a plan to attack the President and senior administration officials attending the high-profile dinner in Washington.

Court documents show that Allen checked into the Washington Hilton hotel on April 24 after travelling by train from California via Chicago. The following evening, at about 8:40 p.m., he approached a secured checkpoint leading to the event’s main ballroom and forced his way through while carrying a long gun.
U.S. Secret Service personnel stationed at the checkpoint responded immediately after a gunshot was fired. An officer wearing a ballistic vest was struck but survived. The officer returned fire, subduing Allen, who was subsequently arrested at the scene.
Authorities said the suspect was found in possession of a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun and a .38 calibre semi-automatic pistol. He sustained minor injuries during the confrontation and was briefly treated at a hospital before being transferred to law enforcement custody.
Investigators further revealed that shortly before the attack, Allen sent an email to family members and a former employer referencing his planned actions. Law enforcement agencies have since obtained the message as part of the ongoing probe.

Officials say records from federal and California firearm databases indicate that the weapons recovered at the scene were legally purchased by the suspect in 2023 and 2025.
Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche said the suspect “faces the full weight of federal justice,” crediting law enforcement officers for preventing what he described as a potentially catastrophic attack.
FBI Director Kash Patel stated that evidence suggests the suspect travelled to Washington “for the purpose of assassinating President Trump,” adding that swift action by security personnel ensured the plan failed.
Also reacting, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro said there is “no room” for political violence, while senior FBI official Darren Cox described the incident as a “brazen attempt” to target the President and other top officials.

The case is being jointly investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Secret Service, with federal prosecutors leading the case. Authorities say the charges filed represent the first step in what is expected to be a broader legal process.
No senior U.S. officials were harmed in the incident, and the President, alongside Vice President JD Vance, was safely evacuated at the time.
