Barely one month to  Nigeria’s Presidential election, the convoy of leading candidate and Labour Party presidential flag bearer, Mr Peter Obi,  was attacked by hoodlums after his campaign rally in Katsina State on Tuesday, 24th January, 2023.

This was confirmed in a statement released by Diran Onifade, head of media, Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council.

Onifade said Obi was attacked by hoodlums on his way to the airport after a successful  rally, which took place at the Muhammad Dikko Stadium.

Katsina is the home state of President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Describing how the incident occurred, Onifade said hoodlums ambushed the campaign team and threw heavy stones on the car the presidential candidate was riding in causing sustantial damage to the vehicle, but Obi and others inside were not hurt.

He further stated that another set of hoodlums threw stones outside the stadium where the rally held and damaged several cars.

“Our candidate had met with women in a townhall and then held a hugely successful Rally at the Muhammad Dikko Stadium.

“However, on his way to the airport, hoodlums attacked the car our candidate was riding in with heavy stones from his drivers’ side causing substantial damage to the vehicle.

“To the glory of God, Mr Obi and other occupants of the car were unhurt. Subsequently another set of thugs also threw stones outside the stadium which damaged several vehicles including that of our official stage crew” Onifade said.

He said that the two incidents made the campaign team suspect that the attacks were orchestrated by “desperate politicians” over Obi’s outings.

The campaign team called on security agencies to investigate the incident and prevent future occurrence.

“The two incidents taken together make us suspect that the attacks may have been premeditated at the behest of desperate polititicians who had been deluding themselves with the false claim that they had the northwest locked up but are now shocked by the show of force of the Obidient movement in the region.

“While thanking the good people of Katsina who came out en masse to support our campaign yesterday, we call on security agencies to investigate this matter to forestall future occurrences,” the the LP campaign statement added.

Meanwhile, the LP presidential campaign train is headed for Gombe State today.

In a tweet at 8:13 am on Wednesday, January 25, 2023, Obi wrote: “Good morning to the good people of Gombe. I’m looking forward to our interaction.”

The rally is taking place at Pantami Township Stadium, Pantami District, Gombe.
