Just In: Osun Guber Tribunal Sacks Adeleke

Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal on Friday quashed the election of Senator Ademola Adeleke as governor of the state.

The Tribunal chaired by Justice Tertse Kume, ruled that there was over-voting in some polling units across the State.

It stated that after deducting excess votes, that of Oyetola was more with 314, 921.

The tribunal therfore annulled the result declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which gave victory to Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the July 16 2022 governorship exercise.

It held that the certificate of return should be withdrawn from Adeleke and issued to ex-governor Adegboyega Oyeyola of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

A notice by the Tribunal, had, last week, fixed today, Friday, January 27, 2023 for judgement.

INEC had declared that Adeleke won a total of 403,371 votes. He won in 17 of the 30 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the state, while Oyetola won in the remaining 13 LGAs with 375,027 votes.

Oyetola had immediately after losing the election, filed a petition at the Election Tribunal where he claimed that the electoral exercise was characterised by over-voting in 749 polling units.

The immediate past governor also claimed that Senator Adeleke forged the academic credentials he submitted to the INEC to contest for the election.
