INEC Resumes Nationwide Voter Registration August 18 Ahead Of 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it will commence a nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise on 18 August 2025, in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

According to the Commission, the CVR will kick off with the activation of its online pre-registration portal, allowing eligible Nigerians to begin the process digitally. This will be followed by in-person registration at designated centers across all 774 local government areas starting on 25 August.

INEC explained that the exercise is aimed at registering eligible citizens who have just turned 18, those who have never registered before, individuals seeking to update or correct their personal details, and internally displaced persons (IDPs) who may have been affected by insecurity or natural disasters.

Registration will take place on weekdays, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at INEC offices and specially designated locations nationwide.

The Commission has urged Nigerians to participate early and avoid last-minute rushes. It also cautioned against any form of inducement or manipulation, stressing that voter registration is free, transparent, and voluntary.

Further details, including documentation requirements and a full list of registration centers, are expected to be made available via INEC’s official website and social media platforms.

The CVR exercise is a constitutional obligation for the electoral body and a key component in ensuring that the 2027 elections are inclusive, credible, and reflective of the will of the people.
