INEC Joined In 71 New Cases At Various Courts In Three Months

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has been joined in 71 new cases at various courts in Nigeria in the last three months.

This was revealed by Barr. Festus Okoye, the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, INEC during its meeting on Thursday, March 17, 2022, to deliberate on a wide range of issues including the rising tide of litigations that indirectly involve the commission.

Barr. Okoye said the commission was briefed by its Litigation and Prosecution Department about the cases, noting that most of the suits, “involve either intra-party issues or litigants seeking for various reliefs from the Courts that entail consequential orders that are binding on the Commission.”

On the case of Ebonyi State which involves court judgment on the defection of the state governor, the deputy and 16 house of assembly members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Okoye said the commission has received has been served with nine separate Orders and Motions from various Courts court on it.

He, however, informed that the commission deferred its deliberation on the Ebonyi case to enable its legal services department to study the processes to enable the commission deliberate make public its decision on it next week.
