INEC Announces Final Phase of Nationwide Voter Registration, Sets July Deadline for Exercise

May 5, 2026

The Independent National Electoral Commission (Independent National Electoral Commission) has announced the resumption of the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise for what it described as the third and final phase, beginning Monday, 11 May 2026, Prime Business Africa reports.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the Commission said the exercise would run until Friday, 10 July 2026.

However, the statement contained a date inconsistency, as it also referred to the resumption year as 2027 in one instance, while all other timelines including the suspension of the second phase on 17 April 2026 and subsequent activities point to a 2026 electoral calendar.

According to the Commission, the second phase of the CVR was suspended on 17 April 2026 to allow for the clean-up of the voters’ register following its publication for claims and objections.

During the upcoming final phase, eligible Nigerians who have attained 18 years of age, as well as those unable to register in earlier phases, are expected to take advantage of the exercise.

The Commission also urged registered voters seeking to transfer their registration, replace lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), or correct their personal details to utilise its online portal or visit INEC offices nationwide.

The electoral body further disclosed that the Register of Voters will be displayed for claims and objections from 23 July to 29 July 2026, in line with statutory requirements aimed at ensuring the credibility and accuracy of the national voters’ database.

INEC said all necessary arrangements had been concluded to ensure a smooth process and appealed to citizens to participate actively, describing voter registration as a critical foundation of the country’s electoral process.
