The rights group in a media statement signed by it’s national coordinator Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, urged state governors especially in Southeast to strengthen their collaboration in ensuring a robust security network within the region secure lives and properties from further destruction.

Commenting on the recent attacks and killings of people of Ehamufu community in Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State, the group commended the governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for rising to call an emergency security meeting with stakeholders in the affected area and reaching decisions on how to tackle the security challenges posed the attacks.

It added that it was such atmosphere of insecurity in the region that formed the fundamental basis for the call by Southeast political leaders to collectively set up a security structure to protect the civilians who frequently come under incessant attacks terrorists.

“We in the HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (HURIWA) are very impressed that the Enugu State Governor is on top of the situation and has effectively activated workable mechanisms to forestall future reoccurrence and we are encouraging the government of Enugu State to pursue the path of putting in place water- tight and fool-proof security network including the setting up of Statewide armed vigilante backed by a law of the Enugu State House of Assembly in line with Section 4(7) of the Nigerian Constitution for the security and good governance of the good people of Enugu State.

“We urge the South East Governors Forum and the South East Political establishment not to abandon the good people of IsiUzo LGA who are now made Internally Displaced persons by the rampaging and marauding armed Fulani terrorists,” HURIWA stated.

Lampooning the activities of Fluani herdsmen, the civil rights group urged the President, Muhammadu Buhari to brand those who are involved in violent attacks as terrorists, and take adequate actions to curtail their excesses in different parts of the country.

Also speaking on the incessant attacks in Zamfara State, the group bemoaned the callous and wicked disposition of the bandits now declared as terrorist who killed over 200 people in the Anka and Bukkuyum Local Government Areas of State last week as they were fleeing the state as a result of military operations.

The  group call on the state governor, Matawalle, to resign “for his government’s spectacular failure to secure the viallgers,” and also blame security officers for failing to “prevent these horrendous terror killings in Zamfara State.”

The attacked villages are Rafin Danya, Barayar Zaki, Rafin Gero and Kurfa.
