First-listen Reactions To BNXN’s ‘Sincerely, Benson’ Album

October 6, 2023

Among the list of releases this year, one album that has been eagerly anticipated is ‘Sincerely, Benson,’ the debut album of the artist formerly known as BUJU, now going by the name of BNXN.

BNXN’s rise in the music industry has been nothing short of astounding, thanks to his dulcet-toned songs and impeccable lyricism that have mind imprint on fans.

As an artist who has consistently impressed with his EPs, ‘Sorry I’m Late’ and ‘Bad Since ’97,’ BNXN’s foray into a full-length album was eagerly awaited. These EPs revealed his storytelling prowess, his ability to croon melodically, and his dedication to portraying his early years as an artist and the experiences that shaped his journey.

However, an album provides an artist with a broader canvas to explore significant creative ideas, and ‘Sincerely, Benson’ doesn’t disappoint in this regard.

‘Sincerely, Benson’ not only promised an autobiographical journey but also introduces exciting collaborations with some of the industry’s finest talents. From the legendary 2Baba to pop sensations like Kizz Daniel and Seyi Vibez, the rising star Taves, and the Jamaican mainstay Popcaan, this album boasts an impressive guestlist.

This is especially noteworthy given BNXN’s own contributions to the songs of other artists, including his feature runs on tracks like Jae5’s “Propeller,” Qing Madi’s “Ole,” and Stefflon Don’s “What’s Poppin.”

After my first listen to ‘Sincerely, Benson,’ here are my thoughts on this highly-anticipated release.

From the moment I pressed play, my expectations were high. BNXN has consistently impressed with his lyrical prowess, and with this being his debut album, there was an added weight of anticipation. His EPs had left me with mixed emotions, mainly due to production inconsistencies.

However, ‘Sincerely, Benson’ pleasantly surprised me with its meticulous attention to production quality. It not only met but in many ways exceeded my prior expectations. However, I’ll reserve my final judgement until I’ve had more listens.

While several tracks stood out upon my initial listen, “Gwagalada” remains a personal favourite, delivering a familiar yet captivating sound. However, to explore new musical territory, I must highlight “Best of Me.” The song immediately caught my attention with its electric guitar and delicate cymbal taps, providing the perfect backdrop for BNXN’s amazing vocals.

Among the impressive guest features on the album, Popcaan’s verse on “Final Answer” left a lasting impression and ranks among my favourites.

Popcaan, who has been on a stellar collaboration spree in 2023, delivered a stand-out performance that not only showcased his talent but also beautifully concluded the album.

Considering that ‘Sincerely, Benson’ is BNXN’s debut album, it is undeniably impressive. The album boasts an excellent line-up of features, exceptional song-writing, and BNXN’s evocative voice. It reaffirms that BNXN knows how to cater to his audience’s desires and is steadily climbing the ladder of success with no intention of looking back.

In the realm of debut albums, ‘Sincerely, Benson’ stands as a solid achievement. BNXN chose to focus on his strengths, both in terms of style and subject matter.
