July 17, 2023

The Abia State Government has debunked speculations that head coach of Enyimba Football Club of Aba, Finidi George has been sacked along with other members of staff at the Nigeria Premier League champions.

However in a swift response to the news making the rounds on the club’s ruthless ‘decision’ few weeks after the club’s Nigeria Premier League truimph at the Super 6 playoffs, the Abia State Government assured that the former Nigeria international is still the coach of the People’s Elephant.

“The Abia State Government wish to call on the general public to disregard the story making the rounds that the technical bench of Nigeria’s premier league champions, Enyimba International Football Club, Aba, has been sacked,” a press release signed by Kazie Uko, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Abia State stated.

“Mr. Finidi George, manager of Enyimba and Nigeria’s former international, remains in charge at the club. Likewise all other officers,” the release on Monday evening further clarified.

Enyimba finished in second place in the regular (abridged) 2022/2023 season but claimed the title in the Super 6 playoffs at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos.

The club however were eliminated in the group stages of the Naija Super 8 tournament – pre season friendlies that is geared towards preparing teams ahead of the start of the next season.

Enyimba are Nigeria’s most successful team on the African continent, having won the CAF Champions League twice in the 2004 and 2005 seasons.

Former Super Eagles captain Nwankwo Kanu, was recently appointed as the new Supervisor and General Manager of the club.
