Nigerian Govt Approves ₦712.26 Billion For Total Overhaul Of Lagos International Airport Terminal

July 31, 2025

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a total of ₦712.26 billion for the complete rehabilitation and expansion of Terminal One at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, disclosed this on Thursday after the FEC meeting presided over by President Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.

Keyamo said the project, awarded to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), will involve dismantling the ageing terminal structure to its core, followed by a comprehensive reconstruction featuring modern mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.

“This is a total overhaul of Terminal One at Lagos International Airport,” the minister said. “It will be stripped to the frame and rebuilt entirely to modern international standards.”

The Lagos project also includes the expansion of Terminal Two, the construction of a new aircraft apron, access roads, bridges, and other critical infrastructure. With these additions, the total investment in Lagos airport under this initiative rises to ₦712.26 billion, making it one of the most significant single investments in Nigeria’s aviation history.

The upgrade is part of a broader ₦900 billion national aviation development plan aimed at modernising major airports across the country.

In a related development, the Council also approved ₦49.9 billion for the construction of a new perimeter fence at MMIA. The 14.6-kilometre steel barrier will feature an intrusion detection system, surveillance cameras, solar-powered floodlights, and a patrol road to enhance airport security.

Keyamo said the new fence will be monitored through a state-of-the-art command centre capable of detecting and pinpointing intrusions in real-time.

“Anyone or anything close to the fence will be detected immediately, and the location pinpointed,” he said, adding that the move aligns with international aviation security best practices.

The government has yet to disclose the expected completion timeline for the projects, but officials say work will commence immediately as part of President Tinubu’s infrastructure renewal agenda.
