FCCPC seals Sahad stores

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has reinstated Sahad Stores, a popular supermarket in Abuja’s Garki area, following assurances of transparent pricing practices.

The decision comes just a day after the store was sealed for deceptive pricing strategies.

Adamu Ahmed Abdullahi, the acting executive vice chairman of the FCCPC, emphasized the importance of transparent pricing to empower consumers. He stated, “Businesses are expected to display transparent pricing information to empower consumers to make informed purchasing decisions, especially during challenging economic times.”

The FCCPC’s action stemmed from investigations revealing discrepancies between displayed and charged prices. Abdullahi highlighted that despite previous warnings, Sahad Stores continued the deceptive practice, leaving customers vulnerable to unfair pricing.

In response to the FCCPC’s concerns, Sahad Stores committed to implementing transparent pricing practices. As part of a mutual understanding, the FCCPC reopened the store on February 16, 2024, at approximately 7 p.m.

This development marks a significant step towards ensuring fair trade practices and protecting consumer rights in the retail sector. Earlier on February 16, the FCCPC had sealed off Sahad Stores for what it termed “misleading pricing and lack of transparency.”

Dr. Adamu Abdullahi, leading the enforcement team, stressed the seriousness of the violation, citing Section 155 of the FCCP Act, which imposes fines of up to N100 million for contraventions.

“We found out that they are contravening this law and made sure that we came to tell them that our mandate is very clear,” Abdullahi remarked, highlighting the FCCPC’s commitment to upholding consumer rights.

While Sahad Stores initially failed to provide adequate defense, their subsequent cooperation and commitment to rectify pricing practices led to the reopening. The move signifies a collaborative effort between regulatory authorities and businesses to promote fair competition and protect consumer interests.

With Sahad Stores back in operation under stricter oversight, consumers can expect greater transparency in pricing, empowering them to make informed choices during their shopping experience.
