Experts Caution Youths On Dangers Of Social Media

As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to mark 2022 International Youth Day, Nigerian youths have been told to shun social media content capable of affecting relationship with their aged parents.

Experts in social media, communication, and correctional psychology, in Ibadan stated this while speaking on the theme of the day.

In his opinion, a social media expert, Mr Yemi Omitola said social platforms and technology have changed the world view of youths noting that social media did not provide needed space for youths to connect with older generations anymore.

Speaking in the same vein, Professor of Applied Communication in the Department of Communication and Language Arts, University of Ibadan, Ayo Ojebode identified Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Pinterest, linkedIn, and Instagram as companions of the youth saying that they preferred spending their time on the social sites.

Professor Ojebode who said some youths still appreciated their elderly parents and related well with them, some however are bored by the old stories being narrated by their aged parents.

While emphasizing the need for youth to reconnect with the older generation, Professor of Correctional Psychology in the Department of Guardian and Counseling, University of Ibadan, Oyesoji Aremu said most youths had lost touch with the concept of Omoluabi adding that youths should not be more concerned about immediate benefits derivable from the social media rather than having concern for their parents.

The scholars advised youths to jettison the attraction of the social media and be more interested in the words of wisdom handed down to them by their elderly parents.

The theme for this year International Youths Day is “Intergenerational solidarity: Creating a World for All Ages.”

International Youth Day is an awareness day designated by the United Nations. The purpose of the day is to draw attention to a given set of cultural and legal issues surrounding youth. The first IYD was observed on 12 August, 2000.
