Ex-Super Eagles Coach, Christian Chukwu, Dies At 74

 Former Super Eagles coach Christian Chukwu has passed on at the age of 74. Chukwu, a former Super Eagles player, was said to have died on Saturday morning. A former captain of the Green Eagles, Segun Odegbami, shared the news.

In a post on his Facebook page, Odegbami said he was informed by Emmanuel Okala, who also played for the Nigerian national team.

“My Chairman has passed on. I just received the news that between 9:00 and 10:00 this morning, ‘Chairman’ Christian Chukwu, MFR, my bosom friend and team mate, one of the greatest football players in Nigeria’s football history, former captain and coach of Nigeria’s national football team, has passed on,” Odegbami wrote on his Facebook page on Saturday.

“Babuje, Emmanuel Okala, MON, gave me the sad news a few minutes ago!

“May ‘Onyim’ find peace with Our Creator in Heaven, and console his family.”

At the time of filing this report, details surrounding his death were yet to be revealed, and there has been no statement from family members.

It would be recalled that on 4 January 2021, when Chukwu celebrated his 70th birthday, he denied death rumours.

“I am terribly embarrassed by this news that I am dead. Several people have been calling me from across the world since the news broke.

“I am still investigating the source of the story,” Chukwu had said at the time.

A talented defender, Chukwu had an outstanding career as the Nigerian national team’s captain, helping them win the 1980 African Nations Cup.
