Dr. Godswill Ihetu, a former top executive at NNPC Limited and Nigeria LNG Limited, provided insights into the impending impact of the Dangote Refinery on Nigeria’s economy.

“The commissioning process is underway, but we’re yet to witness the debut of products in the market,” Dr. Ihetu affirmed during an  interview with ARISE News, shedding light on the refinery’s status and initial operations.

He delved into the technicalities, describing commissioning as a meticulous procedure involving system cleansing before introducing crude oil.

Expressing optimism about the refinery’s potential, Ihetu envisioned substantial petroleum product availability, including surplus for export once all units are operational.

However, he flagged concerns about the initial product range, which excludes PMS (Premium Motor Spirit), hinting at the activated units.

The shift towards local production drew attention as he underlined its impact. Yet, uncertainties lingered regarding the crude oil pricing and the refinery’s reliance on truck transportation, raising environmental worries.

“The sheer volume of trucks poses an environmental challenge,” Ihetu stressed, advocating for strengthened infrastructure to reduce truck dependency and optimize product transportation from Atlas Cove.

In a thought-provoking dialogue, Ihetu painted a nuanced picture, foreseeing economic opportunities coupled with environmental challenges posed by Nigeria’s eagerly anticipated Dangote Refinery.
