Liverpool fought off the threat of Newcastle United Monday night to maintain their leadership in the Premier League table with a 4-2 win.

Two-goal hero Mohamed Salah now set to join his international teammates for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote D’Ivoire was the hero of the night with a brace.

Both sides finished the first half on a scoreless note as they look to continue their title and European push but the tide changed in the second stanza as Salah who had missed a 22nd minute penalty tapped home a cross delivered by Darwin Nunez four minutes after the restart.

That made Salah reach a Premier League milestone as it was his 150th goal in the top division.

Aleksandar Isak restored parity for the Toons not long after Salah scored but fit-again Curtis Jones made it 2-1 with 16 minutes left on the clock before a lucky Cody Gakpo hurried low shot made the lead look more comfortable.

Sven Botman ensured a nervous closing stages as he scored in the 81st minute but there was no stopping Salah from the penalty spot in the 78th minute as he wrapped up victory for the Reds who have extended their lead at the top over second placed Arsenal with five points.
