Following a security review, Canadian government has ordered shutdown of TikTok business operations in the country.
This was announced on Wednesday by Canada’s Industry Minister, François-Philippe Champagne, who clarified that the order was issued to address risks linked to ByteDance Ltd.’s creation of TikTok Technology Canada Inc.

The government said users can continue to create new accounts and browse the video-based social media platform.

“The decision was based on the information and evidence collected over the course of the review and on the advice of Canada’s security and intelligence community and other government partners,” Champagne said in a statement.
The Canadian government advised the citizens to adopt cyber security measures and evaluate the risks of using social media platforms.
Prime Business Africa recalls that the Canadian government had in February 2023 banned TikTok from government mobile devices over security concerns.
Aside from Canada, other countries like the United the United States has also taken steps, the U.S to ban TikTok in the country. The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill in March 2024 to ban TikTok unless ByteDance divests its ownership.
