Arsenal youngster, Miguel Azeez has signed a six-month loan deal to join the Championship side, Wigan Athletic until the end of the 2022/2023 Premier League season.

The move to the Latics means Azeez, who is eligible to play for Nigeria through his parents, will be teaming up with coach Kevin Betsy whom he also worked with at Arsenal’s U-23 team.

Betsy left the club in 2022 to become Crawley Town’s head coach but departed after five months.

Azeez had kind words for his coach, Betsy, and reiterated how the tactician has helped improve his game.

“I feel like it’s important to play different positions, so you understand what other players need from you when you back into that position,” the Hale Ender says. “I feel like under Kevin as manager he gives me freedom, so I enjoy playing under him.”

The midfielder was on loan at League One outfit, Portsmouth, last season where he played 10 league matches.

The Hale End Academy product had spent a similar short-term contract with Spanish side UD Ibiza.

Azeez will be best remembered for playing in one senior Arsenal game in the UEFA Europa League against Dundalk in 2020 where he was impressive in a win for the Gunners.

Azeez further said that he wanted a whole season at the senior level. Therefore it is perhaps unsurprising to see his head out again for playing time at the Championship side.

“I want to play the full season in men’s football, wherever that is,” he stated. “Whether that’s here, or someone else, it is what it is, but that’s the main goal for me.”

Sierra Leone centre-back Steve Caulker also joined the struggling Championship side on a similar temporary basis.

Wigan is coached by former Arsenal defender Kolo Toure who has become one of the few black coaches in the entire English football pyramid.
