Anambra Became Number One In Education During My Tenure As Governor - Obi Replies Critics
Peter Obi

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Mr Peter Obi, has reacted to questions posed by his traducers about building new Schools in Anambra State while he was governor.

Former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Mr Reno Omokri, had last week challenged Obi and his followers to show a single school he started and finished in Anambra during his eight years as governor.

Mr Omokri, writing via his social media handles said he would give $10,000 to anyone who could show a school built by Obi.

Responding to a question raised regarding that during a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, Mr Obi said that those who said that failed to read his manifesto and know what he promised and didn’t promise to do for the people of the state.

He said that when he was campaigning to become governor, all schools in Anambra were shut down for nearly two years and the education went very low, prompting him to promise that he would work hard to raise the standards of education in the state and ensure that schools will not be closed again.

“When I was campaigning to be governor, I said that I will change the education system where schools will not be closed,” Obi stated.

The former governor said when he assumed office as governor, the ranking of the state in National examinations like WASSCE and NECO was 27 but by the time he left office Anambra became number one.

Obi further explained that his administration equiped all the schools in the state with basic facilities to enhance learning. He specifically mentioned that all schools in the state were provided with computers, internet access, vehicles, power generators, and also training of teachers.

“I improved the quality, physical and mental well-being of the people, schools, had the basic things they needed and the people shone like stars and that was my manifesto.

“Building new schools when the old ones are moribund is just like building coastal lines when internal roads are impassable,” Obi stated.

He further noted that the only measure of development when he served as governor was the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the state was ranked number one in the implementation of the goals.

“What I promised the people, I delivered,” he added.
