Ahead of this weekend’s AFCON 2025 qualifier against Cheetah’s of Benin Republic, the NFF has assembled consortium of coaches to assist caretaker coach Austin Eguaavoen.

Eguavoen whose caretaker role in the Eagles has become a recurring decimal was called upon again after the contract between the NFF and German Coach Bruno Labbadia hit the rocks with a bang.

Picked to assist Eguavoen is coach of league Champions Rangers international Fidelis Ilechukwu and Head Coach of Remo Stars Daniel Ogunmodede. Also in the lineup is Slovenian fitness trainer Tomaz Zorec.

Eagles will face Benin Republic coached by former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr on Saturday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, before jetting out to Kigali, Rwanda where they will battle Amuvube at the ever lively Amahoro Stadium on Tuesday.

Eagles who drew with South Africa and lost 2-1 to Benin Republic in the world cup qualifiers in June will be hoping to get back to winning ways banking on home support at the Nest of Champions on Saturday.

It may however not be a tea party as Gernot Rohr who boasts of impressive knowledge of Nigerian players will be hoping to re-enact the feat he achieved three months ago at the Stade Félix-Houphouët-Boigny where Benin had chosen as home ground.

On that occasion Jodel Dossou’s 37th minute goal and Steve Mounie’three minutes added time of the first half was enough to clip Eagles wings. Raphael Onyedika had earlier shot Eagles into the lead but the team lost team as Cheetah fought back to victory.

The outcome of the two matches against Benin Republic and South Africa fast-tracked Finidi George’s resignation.

Finidi George has since take over as coach of Rivers United and will begin his campaign in the new NPFL season against Bendel Insurance Saturday in Benin.
