Adeboye Praises Nigerians’ Cheerfulness Amid Economic Hardship, Sparks Mixed Reactions

October 5, 2025

General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has commended Nigerians for maintaining joy and gratitude despite deepening economic challenges, saying no nation matches Nigeria’s ability to remain hopeful in adversity.

Speaking during a recent church service, Adeboye remarked that after travelling across several countries, he had observed that Nigerians display a unique sense of happiness regardless of hardship.

“I have travelled far and wide, and I can say there is no place like Nigeria when it comes to finding joy even in difficult times,” he told congregants.

His comments come at a time when many Nigerians are struggling with inflation currently around 20.12 percent, a weakened naira, and rising unemployment. Although inflation has eased from the record highs above 30 percent recorded in 2024, the cost of living remains burdensome for households across the country.

According to the 2025 World Happiness Report, Nigeria ranks 105th out of 147 countries, a slight decline from its 2024 position of 102nd. Despite the drop, the country remains among the 10 happiest nations in Africa and is recognised globally for its strong sense of community, generosity, and willingness to help strangers a reflection of its enduring social resilience amid economic strain.

Adeboye’s remarks have sparked a flurry of reactions on X (formerly Twitter), dividing public opinion. Supporters viewed his statement as an acknowledgment of Nigerians’ resilience and faith, while critics accused him of being detached from the realities of poverty and hardship.

Others recalled his outspoken criticism of former Late President Buhari’s administration, contrasting it with what they perceive as a more cautious tone under President Bola Tinubu’s government.

Some social media users argued that Adeboye’s statement downplayed citizens’ struggles, while others defended it as a morale-boosting message meant to inspire gratitude and perseverance in difficult times.

Pastor Adeboye, one of Nigeria’s most influential religious figures, has long blended faith with social commentary. During President Buhari’s tenure, he often voiced concerns about insecurity and economic stagnation, even leading nationwide prayer walks for divine intervention.

In more recent messages, however, Adeboye has shifted focus toward personal endurance and faith-based resilience. Earlier in 2025, he urged Nigerians “not to measure their happiness by current economic hardship” but to continue trusting God despite the country’s challenges, reflecting his emphasis on spiritual rather than political responses to national issues.

Reports also indicate that Adeboye may soon lead national intercessory prayers for economic recovery, underscoring his belief in faith-driven engagement over public criticism of government policy.

The debate over Adeboye’s remarks highlights a broader Nigerian paradox a people renowned for their optimism and adaptability, yet weary of the enduring social and economic pressures that test that spirit. While many celebrate his recognition of national resilience, critics insist that faith leaders must balance encouragement with advocacy for accountability and systemic reform.

For Adeboye, whose influence cuts across religion, politics, and civil society, the mixed reactions reflect how deeply religious voices continue to shape and sometimes polarize public discourse during one of Nigeria’s most economically challenging periods in recent years.
