In his words, Governor Obaseki stated, “We have introduced free transport service for passengers on all routes operated by the state-owned Edo City Transport Service (ECTS), among many support programs that the Edo State Government has put in place to reduce the challenge, sufferings, and exorbitant cost of living faced by Edo people.”

The governor went on to report the success of the free transport initiative, which covers 13 intra-city and several intercity routes, benefiting over 300,000 residents in the first two weeks. An estimated 1,500,000 residents are projected to benefit from this program within the initial two months. To accommodate the increased demand, the government has placed orders for additional CNG-run buses.

Furthermore, Governor Obaseki announced the launch of a 24-hour free Wi-Fi service in various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) and other public places across the state. This initiative aims to provide unlimited internet access to workers and residents for improved productivity.

Regarding the review of the minimum wage, the governor mentioned, “We have begun reviewing the minimum wage of our workers, which is currently N40,000 (the highest in the country), to increase it as soon as the Federal Government revises the Revenue Allocation Formula.”

Governor Obaseki also assured that his administration would continue to ensure prompt payment of salaries and pensions, enhance the work environment, and leverage technology to improve efficiency in delivering better services to the Edo people.

Furthermore, the governor highlighted the deplorable state of federal roads in the state and called on the federal government to consider devolving authority and resources to the state and local governments, particularly for the management of federal roads.

In conclusion, Governor Obaseki urged Edo people and all Nigerians to unite, regardless of political, tribal, ideological, and religious differences, to work towards a more prosperous and progressive Edo State and Nigeria.

The governor’s Independence Day address emphasized his commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the people and promoting economic growth and development in Edo State.
