The University of Lagos (UNILAG) made an announcement regarding the reduction of tuition fees, following a meeting with representatives from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Thursday. This decision comes after recent protests by students against the fee increases.
In an official statement released on Friday morning, UNILAG revealed that a meeting had taken place between the university’s authorities, led by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, and NANS President Comrade Usman Umar Barambu, along with other NANS officials and UNILAG Faculty leaders from nine faculties and the College of Medicine.
Join our WhatsApp ChannelDuring the meeting, Comrade Usman Umar Barambu emphasized the demands put forward by the students, which included the reversal of obligatory fees, the rollback of hostel fees, and the reinstatement of the Students’ Union Government at UNILAG.

However, Prof. Ogunsola emphasized that the primary goal of the university was to provide quality education to all students, regardless of their socioeconomic backgrounds, ethnicities, or religious beliefs.
After careful deliberation and discussions between the students and university management, the following resolutions were reached:
Reduction in Utility Charges: Utility charges for all categories of students have been reduced from N20,000 to N15,000.
Revised Obligatory Fees for Undergraduates: Obligatory fees for new undergraduate students without lab/studio courses have been reduced from N126,325 to N116,325. For courses with lab/studio, fees have been reduced from N176,325 to N166,325.
Revised Obligatory Fees for Returning Undergraduates: Obligatory fees for returning undergraduate students without lab/studio courses have been reduced from N100,750 to N80,750.
For courses with lab/studio, fees have been reduced from N140,250 to N120,250. Medical, Pharmacy, and Health Professions students will now pay N170,250 instead of N190,250.
Reduced Convocation Fee: The convocation fee for all final year students has been lowered from N30,000 to N27,000.
Hostel Fee Adjustments: Hostel fees have undergone significant reductions. For undergraduate hostels on Akoka and Yaba campuses, fees have been reduced from N90,000 to N43,000. In Idi-Araba campus hostels, the fee has been reduced from N120,000 to N65,000. Sodeinde Hall fees have been lowered from N250,000 to N135,000.
This decision to reduce fees comes after several UNILAG students protested against the initial fee hikes in July. The university management had initially cited economic conditions as the rationale behind the tuition increases.
The consensus reached between the university and student representatives demonstrates a commitment to addressing the concerns of students and ensuring that education remains accessible and affordable for all at the University of Lagos.
