DSS Raises The Alarm Over Plot To Compromise National Security Via Violent Protest

By Chiamaka Ajomiwe

The Department of State Services (DSS) says it has uncovered a plot by some politicians to organise violent protests across the country over the current economic challenges, with the aim of discrediting the federal government, its security agencies, and ultimately, compromising national security.

In a statement released on Monday, September 4, DSS Spokesperson Dr Peter Afunaya, said the agency got wind of the plans through credible intelligence.

He said the motive of those organising the protest is to ride on the back of the current challenges to incite violence.

Dr Afunanya claimed that the plotters are some of the politicians desperately mobilizing unsuspecting student leaders, ethnic base associations, and disgruntled youth for the purpose of carrying out this operation.

“These individuals had also stockpiled weapons and other dangerous items to use during the protests.

The spokesperson said the agency has identified “the ring leaders of the plot” and is keeping them under check so as to deter them from plunging the country into a state of lawlessness.

The agency’s swift action prevented the planned violence from taking place and ensured the safety of citizens.

The DSS immediately deployed its operatives to apprehend the suspects and confiscate the weapons. The agency has assured the public that it will continue to work tirelessly to prevent any threats to the peace and security of the country.

The statement urged university Vice Chancellors and heads of other tertiary institutions to therefore to discourage their students from engaging in acts capable of derailing public peace.

Furthermore, the service enjoined parents and guardians “to admonish their wards to shun the lure of participating in inimical behaviours or conduct against law and order.”

The agency said it remains committed to protecting the country and its citizens from all forms of threats and will continue to work closely with other security agencies to maintain peace and order and warned “those desirous of subverting national security to retrace their steps.”

The DSS therefore called on citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
