Guinea Coup Attempt Foiled By Presidential Guard, Says Defence Ministry

FOLLOWING the military uprising that occoured on Sunday in Guinea, where Military claimed to have taken over the government and suspended the country’s constitution, the defence ministry has said the attempted takeover has been thwarted by the presidential guard.

The Defence Ministry said in a statement that “the presidential guard, supported by the loyalist and republican defence and security forces, contained the threat and repelled the group of assailants.”

It added that “security and combing operations are continuing to restore order and peace.”

However, the fate of the President, Alpha Conde who was arrested by the mutinious group of soldiers spearheading the unrest is still uncertain.

Reports indicated that arrest of President Conde was preceded by hours of heavy gunfire across the capital city, Conakry which has created an atmosphere of choas, making the civilians scamper for safety.
