Utomi Opens Up On Battle With Prostate Cancer

August 12, 2023

In an emotional revelation on Friday, Prof. Pat Utomi, a prominent figure in the Labour Party, shared his struggle with prostate cancer that he was diagnosed with last year.

This disclosure sheds light on the reason behind his recent absence from public engagement.

In a series of tweets, Prof. Utomi highlighted the devastating impact of prostate cancer on men’s lives. He emphasized that greater awareness and early detection could significantly improve the prospects of managing and treating this condition, drawing parallels to the successful efforts made in preventing breast cancer among women.

“When a biopsy showed I was positive last year I began treatment with a cancer Centre with a branch in Ikeja and VI,” Utomi said.

“I sometimes came from election campaigns to the Ikeja Centre near the Airport. The Doctors would try to smuggle me out from the back.”

The distinguished Political Economist revealed that following the conclusion of recent elections, his young nephews and cousins who practice medicine in Europe and the US collaborated with medical professionals from Lakeshore, and together, they made the decision to take on his direct care.

This collaboration, he explained, led to a period of reduced communication as they took measures to minimize stress by managing his phone interactions.
“joined forces with the Lakeshore people and decided they wanted me in their direct care.”

“That’s how come it seemed I went quiet ’cause they controlled my phones to reduce stress,” he added.

Prof. Utomi, a key figure in the Labour Party, played a crucial role in supporting the 2023 presidential campaign of Peter Obi, which introduced an unprecedented third force in Nigerian politics.
