Sabrina Elba, wife of the renowned actor and musician Idris Elba, recently opened up about her experiences as the partner of a global star and the challenges of finding her own identity within the confines of their marriage.

Being the spouse of a famous actor comes with its own set of unique obstacles, and Sabrina’s journey has been no exception. She revealed that she encountered critics who constantly attempted to diminish her voice, relegating her to the shadow of her husband’s stardom.

The daunting task of carving her own path amid the blinding limelight was one she approached with unwavering determination.

Sabrina expressed the significance of preserving her own identity, independent of her husband’s renowned name. She acknowledged that while it is challenging when her partner’s identity is so dominant, she remains committed to forging her own path and maintaining her sense of self.

She emphasized, “It’s important to me to maintain my own identity and sometimes that can be hard when someone else’s identity is so strong and so strong.”

Recalling her encounters with disparaging attitudes over the years, Sabrina refused to succumb to the pressure of conforming to expectations imposed by others.

She recounted instances when people tried to undermine her worth, dismissing her opinions merely because of her association with Idris. However, she firmly stood her ground, declaring, “I’m not going to change my identity.

It was this attitude I was feeling towards me of ‘there’s no reason you should be speaking up or talking about things you care about because you’re only here because of him.’ And I remember thinking that’s your prerogative, I’m still going to say and talk and be whoever I wanna be.”

The toll of constant scrutiny and hateful comments on social media eventually led Sabrina to stop checking her Instagram comments altogether.

She took this step as an act of self-preservation, understanding the importance of protecting her mental well-being and not allowing negativity to consume her.

Sabrina’s journey with Idris began during a fortuitous jazz party in Vancouver, Canada, where their paths crossed on a memorable Sunday.

She recalled being drawn to him, sensing a uniqueness that set him apart from the crowd. Their love story blossomed, and on February 10, 2018, during a screening of Idris’s film Yardie at an East London cinema, he proposed, sealing their commitment to each other.

In 2019, the couple tied the knot in a lavish ceremony at the Ksar Char Bagh Hotel in Marrakesh, an event covered by British Vogue, which featured a spectacular performance by Nigerian superstar Davido.
