Hilaria’s diagnosis with kidney disease in 2008 was a devastating blow to her and her family. After undergoing extensive treatment, including dialysis, she was fortunate enough to receive a kidney transplant in 2018 because a mum agreed to organ donation, after losing her son, giving Hilaria a second chance at life. What a second chance that is!

This life-changing event led her to become involved in various community service initiatives and advocacy work, particularly in the healthcare sector, setting up her charity, WSH BME Kidney Network, raising awareness about kidney disease, organ donation, and health inequalities affecting the Black community and other under-represented white communities in the UK. Hilaria is also building a free dialysis centre in Edo State to treat people who cannot afford the expensive dialysis treatment.

In her bid for the councillorship of Walkden South, Hilaria ran on a platform of healthcare reform, community empowerment, and economic growth. Her passion and focus on the betterment of her community resonated with the voters, leading to her victory in the local elections.

“I am humbled and honoured to have been elected as a councillor for Walkden South,” said Hilaria. “As a kidney patient, I understand the importance of accessible and affordable healthcare, and I am committed to making sure that our community has access to the best possible care. I also believe in the power of community involvement and participation in decision-making, and I will work tirelessly to ensure that every voice is heard.”

Hilaria’s inspiring journey from a patient to a public servant is a testament to her resilience, determination, and unwavering commitment to service. She is a shining example of what can be achieved when individuals are given the opportunity to contribute to their communities and make a difference in the lives of others.
