The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has denied discriminating against persons with physical disabilities following a report that the apex bank is not accepting job applications from them.
A recruitment portal stated that the central bank is conducting a general recruitment exercise, stating that people with physical disabilities are not qualified to apply.
Join our WhatsApp ChannelHowever, in a statement on Thursday, 14 April 2023, addressing the recruitment portal’s claim, the CBN denied discriminating against people with physical disabilities.
The financial regulator described the recruitment portal as fake, stating that the CBN is not currently conducting a general recruitment exercise as claimed.
CBN also refuted the claim that it requested for Bank Verification Number (BVN) from job applicants. The central bank advised job seekers to be wary of fraudulent recruitment agents.
The apex bank said such recruitment portals intend to take advantage of the employment challenge to defraud eligible applicants.
Recall that Prime Business Africa previously reported that the unemployment rate will rise to 40.6 per cent in 2023, up from the 37.7 per cent unemployment rate in 2022.
According to KPMG, there are about 4 to 5 million new entrants into Nigeria’s job market yearly, but the Nigerian economy doesn’t have the ability to get them engaged.
In the statement signed by CBN’s Acting Director, Corporate Communications, Isa AbdulMumin, it was stated that: “The attention of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been drawn to a fake recruitment portal inviting “eligible” members of the public to submit applications in an exercise that will commence soon.
“The fraudulent website lists requirements for eligibility to include, among other qualifications, the possession of a Bank Verification Number (BVN). The portal goes on to state that those with physical disabilities are not eligible to apply.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the CBN is currently not carrying out any general recruitment exercise and will never request for the BVN of intending applicants nor discriminate against persons with physical disabilities.
“Accordingly, members of the public are hereby warned to be wary of fraudulent recruitment agents bent on taking advantage of the employment challenge to defraud eligible applicants, particularly young graduates. Please be guided accordingly.”
