Naira Crisis: NLC Directs Workers To Protest At CBN Offices Nationwide

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has directed all workers to protest at all the offices of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) nationwide starting next week over the persisting cash crisis in the country.

The NLC President, Joe Ajaero, who briefed journalists in Abuja, said the mobilisation for the exercise will begin on Friday while the total shutdown of economic activities across the nation will begin next week Wednesday.

Recall that NLC issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government on March 2023, calling for an immediate action to alleviate the hardship caused by cash and fuel scarcity or face industrial action by Nigerian workers.

Ajaero added that the industrial action became necessary as the Federal Government through different channels appealed to take into consideration the severe difficulty workers and Nigerian citizens are experiencing because of the persistent cash scarcity.

The federal government had announced the introduction of new naira notes and the withdrawal of the old notes to reduce cash in circulation and for security reasons.

Nigerians appear to have found it difficult to cope with policy due to the unavailability of the new naira notes  when the old ones were withdrawn from circulation.

Till recently, when the old notes were reintroduced following the Supreme Court order which is yet to solve the problem of cash scarcity, the scarcity still persist.
