EFCC Arrests Former Abia State Governor Theodore Orji

THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested a former Governor of Abia State, Senator Theodore Orji at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The ex- governor, who has been on the commission’s watch list, was arrested at about 10 am Thursday and taken to EFCC headquarters for interrogation.

Orji’s son, Chinedu, who is the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly has also been detained by the EFCC.

Chinedu was said to have turned himself in upon learning of his father’s arrest.

Senator Orji and his sons, Chinedu and Ogbonna, are under investigation by the EFCC for misappropriation of public funds and money laundering amounting to N551bn.

The ex- governor was accused of embezzling the N500m monthly security vote he received for eight years as the governor of Abia state between 2007 and 2015.

Other issues are the mismanagement of N2bn Ecological Fund and conversion of Sure-P funds.

Orji’s arrest was confirmed by EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren.
