The number of active subscribers for telephony services or voice calls in Nigeria grew by 11.86 per cent year-on-year to 214.35 million at the end of October 2022.
Prime Business Africa’s industry analysis showed that the number increased by 22.73 million within 12 months when compared to the 191.61 million reported same month in 2021.

At the end of the period in review, Prime Business Africa learnt that MTN Nigeria recorded the highest growth (13.13 per cent) in telephony subscribers, followed by Airtel (13.1 per cent), Globacom (10.57 per cent).
While MTN Nigeria, Airtel and Globacom recorded growth in their telephony subscriber, 9mobile was the only network provider to suffer -0.31 per cent loss in its voice subscriber base.
MTN Nigeria: MTN Nigeria’s voice subscriber base increased by 13.13 per cent after 9.66 million telephony users joined the firm between October 2021 and October 2022.
The 13.13 per cent increased the subscriber base from 73.60 million at the end of October last year, to 83.27 million at the end of October this year.
Airtel: The network provider gained 6.80 million subscribers within 12 months, raising the telephony subscriber base to 58.66 million users from 51.86 million.
Despite recording the second highest growth in the one year period, Airtel ended the period in review as the third largest market share holder behind MTN Nigeria and Globacom.
Globacom: The telecommunications company recorded 10.57 per cent year-on-year growth, indicating 6.30 million new subscribers joined the Glo network.
This was enough for Globacom to retain its second largest share of the telephony market, as it closed October 2022 with 59.63 million, surpassing the 53.33 million recorded at the end of same month last year.
Meanwhile, Prime Business Africa had also reported that Airtel outperformed MTN and Glo in the data war, with 9mobile losing over 970,000 data subscribers.
