Nigerian government has ordered Vice Chancellors of public universities to reopen schools and resume lectures for students.

The government’s directive came through the National Universities Commission (NUC) in a letter signed by the Director, Finance and Accounts of the NUC, Sam Onazi, on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the commission, Professor Abubakar Rasheed.

The letter which was addressed to all vice-chancellors; Pro-Chancellors and chairmen of governing councils of federal universities, charged them to “Ensure that ASUU members immediately resume/commence lectures.”

The commission also directed the university authorities to “restore the daily activities and routines of the various University campuses.”

Recall that the National Industrial Court on Wednesday last week ordered the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off the seven-month-old strike pending the determination of the suit brought before it by the federal government against ASUU over the ongoing industrial action.
