Osun Election Outcome Not A Verdict On Labour Party’s Nationwide Strength – Obi

July 18, 2022

Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi has congratulated Senator Ademola Adeleke on winning the Osun Governorship election held on Saturday, 16 July 2022.

Senator Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scored 403, 371 to defeated his closest rival and incumbent governor of the state, Adegboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who got 375,027.

Obi in a statement posted on his verified Twitter handle on Sunday night, also commended the Labour Party governorship candidate in the election, Rt. Hon Lasun Sulaimon Yusuff and his running mate, Adeola Adekunle Atanda for the spirit of sportsmanship they displayed in the keenly contested election despite the outcome.

The LP presidential flag bearer, however, told their supporters that the outcome of the election is not a verdict on the party’s growing nationwide strength. This is apparently clarifying the remarks made in some quarters that the party could not score high votes in the election despite its growing national appeal in recent times.

Obi said they are barely one month in the party and had to contend with some forces that have dragged the political system backward for some decades.

He noted that the party has within a few weeks made its impact felt nationwide and urged the members and supporters to remain committed to the noble goal of rescuing the country from the throes of poor governance as the 2023 general election approaches.

The statement reads, “I extend my warmest personal congratulations to Sen. Ademola Adeleke on wining the Osun State Gubernatorial election.

“I also congratulate the candidate of our Labour Party, Rt. Hon Lasun Sulaimon Yusuff and his running mate, Adeola Adekunle Atanda, on a hard- fought battle. Their spirit of reslove and sportsmanship, despite the outcome is commendable.

“To our ‘Obi-dient Movement’ Family and our supporters nationwide, the outcome of this particular election is not a verdict on our exponentially growing strength nationwide, especially when viewed against the fact that we are barely one month old in the party and had to contend with forces that have been entrenched in the state for the last two decades.

“It is, however, refreshing to observe that within this very short period of only a few weeks, the Labour Party has made its presence and political impact felt nationally.
“We must strengthen our collective resolve and not relent in our noble march to take back our country.

“Much work remains to be done, hence we must focus the totality of our efforts now on the forthcoming 2023 General elections. In the fullness of time, our message of rescue and recovery will resonate throughout the length and breath of the nation.

“We are confident that most Nigerian electorates will buy into our mission to take back Nigeria, for the purpose of rescuing it from continued decline, changing the national psyche from consumption to production and from sharing dwindling resources to creating wealth and ultimately combating poverty frontally,” Obi stated.
