CAF increase prize monies for top teams at tournament

The prize money for the 2022 CAF Africa Women’s Cup of Nations in Morocco has been made public with nine-time African champions, Nigeria’s Super Falcons gunning for a princely sum of N208million (USD 500 000) reports Prime Business Africa.

Confederation of African Football elected to increase the money by 15% in line with the new policy at CAF to make women’s football in Africa globally competitive.

The 2022 CAF Africa Women’s Cup of Nations in Morocco began on Saturday evening with the hosts defeating Burkina Faso 1-0 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, in Rabat.

The overall increase from USD 975 000 to increase of 150% in prize money for the competition means the winner of this year’s edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2022 will pocket USD 500 000 – a 150% increase of USD 300 000. Previous winners of this competition received USD 200 000.

The prize money for runners-up has almost doubled from USD 175 000 to USD 300 000 and the semi-finalists will get USD 225 000 each which has increased from USD 125 000.

The four semifinalists will qualify for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand while the fifth placed side will play an intercontinental playoffs.
