Wales captain Gareth Bale on Saturday evening sensationally agreed to join Major League Soccer (MLS) leading side Los Angeles FC on a one-year contract.

The Welsh star is set to join Los Angeles FC following the expiration of his Real Madrid contract.

The forward who won five UEFA Champions League titles with the Spanish champions is keen to keep fit ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and his decision consequently quashed media reports that he could retire from the game if his country had failed to qualify for the World Cup.

Bale’s acquisition could be another feather in the cap for LAFC, who are enjoying a fruitful summer. They have already brought in Juventus legend Giorgio Chiellini earlier in the summer.

Bale is among the most dynamic attacking players of his generation when healthy and on a top team. He scored 106 goals in 258 appearances for Madrid, which won five Champions League titles and three La Liga crowns during his tenure.

But Bale has played sparingly and occasionally ineffectively for Madrid in recent years. He made only seven appearances for the European champions this past season while struggling with several injuries.

Bale also went on a season-long loan to Tottenham in 2020-21, scoring 16 goals in 34 appearances for Spurs. The brilliant goal-scorer joined Madrid from Spurs in 2013 for a then-record transfer fee.
