Students of Akwa Ibom State University, Ikot Akpaden, in the Mpat Enin Local Government Area of the state, have been protesting following over 75% increase in school fees for fresh students in the 2020/2021 academic year.
The students halted academic activities in the institution on Monday for some hours in a peaceful demonstration.

My parents are sweating and working hard so that they can send me and my siblings to school.
“Our school will then come to increase our school fees, how then do we want to eat if the money for my upkeep is added to my school fees. My parents will just tell me to go and learn work or better still drop out because they cannot afford it”.
Prime Business Africa Understands that new students, who were indigenes of the state, were mandated to pay N90,000, instead of the initial N53,000, while non-indigenes were to pay N120,000.
However, all returning students were to pay the same amount they paid last session: N53,000 for indigenes and N73,000 for non-indigenes.
