Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Bosun Tijani announced the planned rollout in a post on X, describing the system as a simpler and more precise way of identifying locations across the country.

The minister also urged Nigerians to prepare to generate their individual postcodes ahead of the launch.
The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) and is designed around an 11-character, geographic information system-enabled code for addressable locations.
Unlike Nigeria’s existing six-digit postal codes, which generally cover broader geographic areas, the new system is intended to provide more precise, building-level location identification.
The government expects the system to support services beyond conventional mail delivery, including logistics, e-commerce, emergency response, security operations and public administration.
More accurate location data could help delivery companies identify customers and plan routes more efficiently, while emergency agencies could use precise addresses to improve response times.
Officials have also identified potential applications in law enforcement, intelligence gathering, critical infrastructure protection and government planning.

NIPOST has been conducting field validation exercises ahead of the rollout to verify locations and prepare the national postcode database.
The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy has described the project as part of broader efforts to develop Nigeria’s digital public infrastructure and establish a standardised addressing framework.
The official postcode platform lists Oct. 1, 2026, as the nationwide launch date.
The success of the system will depend on its coverage and adoption by government agencies, businesses and the wider public, as well as its integration into services that rely on accurate location information.
The rollout is expected to mark a significant change in Nigeria’s addressing system by providing a standardised digital location layer for homes, businesses and other addressable properties nationwide.
