The Federal Government has moved swiftly against the newly installed Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Professor Ikechukwu Dozie, directing him to reverse the appointment of 24 aides and report to the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja over alleged breaches of the regulatory framework governing appointments in federal universities, Prime Business Africa reports.
The directive, contained in a letter dated June 25, 2026, followed the ministry’s review of an internal university memorandum, referenced FUT/REG/CR/CIR/4 and dated June 22, 2026, through which the appointments were made.
The letter, signed by the Acting Director of University Education, Dr. Kareem O. L., on behalf of the Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, described the appointments as irregular and inconsistent with extant regulations, established procedures and the principles of due process guiding appointments within Nigeria’s federal university system.

According to the ministry, the appointments “are at variance with the extant regulations, established procedures, and the principles of due process governing appointments within the Federal University System.”
Consequently, the ministry directed Professor Dozie to immediately withdraw the appointments and forward documentary evidence confirming compliance without delay.
Beyond ordering the reversal of the appointments, the ministry also summoned the vice-chancellor to its headquarters in Abuja on Monday, June 29, 2026, for an engagement on the matter.
The letter stated that the meeting would address not only the controversial appointments but also broader issues relating to institutional governance, administrative accountability, due process and strict adherence to the regulatory framework governing the administration of federal universities in Nigeria.
Professor Dozie assumed office as FUTO’s ninth substantive vice-chancellor on June 18, 2026, succeeding Professor Nnenna Oti. The Federal Government’s intervention, coming less than two weeks into his tenure, underscores its resolve to enforce compliance with established governance standards and administrative procedures across federal universities.
Copies of the directive were forwarded to the National Universities Commission (NUC), highlighting the seriousness with which the ministry views adherence to statutory regulations in the nation’s tertiary education system.

Reaffirming its commitment to accountability in the sector, the ministry said it remained focused on promoting transparency, prudence and best practices in the administration of tertiary institutions.
“The Ministry remains committed to promoting transparency, prudence and best practices in the management of our tertiary institutions and trusts that this matter will receive your prompt attention and cooperation,” the letter added.
The development is expected to be closely watched by stakeholders in the education sector, as the outcome of the ministry’s engagement with the FUTO vice-chancellor could set a precedent for administrative appointments and reinforce compliance with governance standards across Nigeria’s federal universities.
As of the time of filing this report, neither Professor Dozie nor the management of FUTO had issued an official response to the ministry’s directive.
