Athena Election Observatory Deploys Real-Time Result Capture System for Ekiti Governorship Poll

June 20, 2026

The Athena Election Observatory (AEO) has activated an upgraded election audit platform ahead of the Ekiti State governorship election, enabling near real-time capture of polling-unit results as they are uploaded to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Result Viewing Portal (IReV), Prime Business Africa reports.

The observatory said the enhancement marks a significant step in strengthening post-election auditing and transparency, while also laying the groundwork for the release of its pending audit reports on the Ondo and Anambra governorship elections.

According to the organisation, more than 200 trained data-entry and quality-control personnel have been deployed to support a large-scale result capture operation during the Ekiti poll. The initiative is expected to create an early, structured repository of election results that will be used for subsequent verification and analysis.

AEO explained that the platform upgrade forms part of its broader effort to improve evidence-based election auditing and provide a stronger foundation for assessing electoral outcomes.

The observatory also disclosed that publication of its audit reports on the Ondo and Anambra governorship elections was deliberately delayed to allow for the completion, testing and validation of the upgraded platform.

It clarified, however, that the capture of polling-unit results should not be mistaken for a full election audit, noting that comprehensive verification, reconciliation and forensic analysis would be conducted after additional electoral records, including Biometric Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) data and other statutory election documents, are obtained and reviewed.

The development comes as stakeholders continue to push for greater transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s electoral process, with independent election audits increasingly viewed as a tool for strengthening public confidence in election outcomes.

The Athena Election Observatory said its objective is to build a comprehensive evidentiary record from the earliest stages of result publication, thereby enhancing the quality and credibility of post-election assessments.

It reaffirmed its commitment to promoting transparency, accountability and data-driven electoral reforms across Nigeria.
