The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has cautioned the Federal Government against any alleged plan to approve or legitimise a proposed security outfit linked to Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Igboho, warning that such a move could threaten national unity and democratic stability ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Nnadozie Onwubiko, the rights group expressed concern over Igboho’s proposed “Iru Ekun Security Network,” describing it as a development capable of encouraging ethnic militias and political vigilantism under the guise of regional security operations.
HURIWA alleged that the proposed outfit could be weaponised for political purposes, particularly in the South West, if not subjected to strict constitutional safeguards and federal oversight.

According to the association, previous public statements allegedly made by Igboho against opposition presidential aspirants and political actors in the South West had already raised security concerns.
HURIWA recalled that it had earlier petitioned the Department of State Services (DSS) over alleged inciting comments credited to the Yoruba Nation agitator but claimed that no public response or action was taken by the agency.

The organisation warned that the silence of security agencies over alleged hate speech and incitement could create the impression of selective enforcement of the law and unequal treatment based on ethnic or political considerations.
It further criticised what it described as double standards in the handling of separatist agitators across different regions of the country, insisting that the law must be applied fairly and consistently.
“HURIWA believes that Nigeria cannot afford a situation whereby political actors or separatist figures build parallel armed structures capable of influencing electoral outcomes or intimidating sections of the population under the pretext of regional security operations,” the statement said.
The group urged the Federal Government, the National Assembly, security agencies, civil society organisations, and the international community to closely monitor developments surrounding the proposed security network to prevent any abuse capable of undermining democratic stability.
HURIWA also called on the government to focus on strengthening existing constitutional security institutions instead of encouraging the proliferation of ethnic-based armed formations.
While sympathising with victims of kidnappings and violent attacks in parts of the South West, the association acknowledged the growing insecurity confronting communities across the country but maintained that responses to insecurity must remain lawful, inclusive, and nationally accountable.
The group warned that Nigeria’s democracy could be endangered if security arrangements are perceived as politically motivated or ethnically aligned.
