At least 11 people were killed and more than 50 houses set ablaze in a communal clash in Akyawa and Udege Kasa communities in Nasarawa state, police said Saturday.
The violence, which occurred Friday in Nasarawa Local Government Area, was triggered by a reprisal attack by suspected hoodlums over the alleged killing of two of their kinsmen, police spokesperson Ramhan Nansel said in a statement.
“In the course of the attack, 11 people were killed, while about 52 houses were burnt in the two communities,” Nansel said.
Join our WhatsApp ChannelNansel said the state Commissioner of Police, Shetima Mohammed, visited the affected communities to assess the damage and oversee efforts to restore calm.
He said the police chief expressed sorrow over the incident and assured residents that those responsible would be brought to justice. Authorities have launched a manhunt for the attackers and deployed additional personnel to the area to prevent further violence.
Police are working with the military and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to secure the communities, Nansel said.

He added that a meeting with community stakeholders was held, where residents were urged to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies. Police said normalcy had been restored and measures put in place to prevent a recurrence.
