NASS Confirms Nine Nominees As NPC, NERC Commissioners

The Nigerian Senate has confirmed five nominees appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari as Commissioners of the National Population Commission (NPC).

The upper chamber also confirmed four other nominees as Commissioners of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

The confirmation of the nominees which was done on Wednesday, followed the consideration of two separate reports by the Committees on National Identity and National Population; and Power.

Two separate presentations were made by Senators Ya’u Sahabi Alhaji (Zamfara North) and Gabriel Suwam, who both Chair the respective Committees.

The nominees were confirmed after the chamber considered the reports.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday, signed by the Special Assistant on media to President of the Senate, Dr. Ezrel Tabiowo, the nominees confirmed as Commissioners of the National Population Commission include: Chief Engr. Benedict Ukpong Effiong (Akwa-Ibom), Mrs. Gloria Fateya Izonfo (Bayelsa), Barr. Kupchi Patricia Ori Iyanya (Benue), Dr. Haliru Bala (Kebbi), and Dr. Eyitayo Oyekunle Oyetunji (Oyo).

It added that the four nominees confirmed as Commissioners of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission were Dr. Yusuf Ali (North Central), Engr. Chidi Ike (South East), Mr. Nathan Rogers Shatti (North East), and Mr. Dafe Akpeneye (South South).

Buhari Seeks To Replace ICPC Nominee From Ekiti State

Meanwhile, the Senate also received a letter from President Buhari  requesting for replacement of Dr. Mojisola Yaya-Kolade from Ekiti State who he earlier nominated for confirmation as Commissioner at the Independent Corrupt Practices And Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

The President in the letter dated 9th February, 2022, and read on the floor of the red chamber on Wednesday by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, sought to replace Yaya-Kolade with Olugbenga Adeyanju, AIG (Rtd).

Adeyanju who is also from Ekiti State is expected to be confirmed as Commissioner representing the South-West zone at the Commission.

The letter reads in part, “I’m accordance with the provision of Section 3(3)(a) ICPC Act, I wrote to forward for confirmation by the Senate, the appointment of Olugbenga Adeyanju, AIG (Rtd) from Ekiti State as Commissioner representing South-West replacing the other nominee, at the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). The nominee’s CV Is attached.

“It is my hope that the Senate will consider and confirm the nominee in the usual expeditious manner.”
