PDP Elects New Local Government Leaders in Bayelsa

March 8, 2026

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State has elected new leaders across its eight local government areas following party congresses held over the weekend, officials said.

The exercise was conducted peacefully, with consensus arrangements used in selecting party executives in several councils.

Speaking at the congress in Ogbia Local Government Area on Saturday, the PDP caretaker chairman in the state, George Turnah, said residents of the council area and the state remained committed to the party, which he said had produced leaders at both state and national levels.

Turnah warned members who defected to other parties that the PDP was mobilising to reclaim its political mandate ahead of the 2027 general elections and the 2028 off-cycle governorship poll in the state.

“PDP is Bayelsa, and Bayelsa is PDP. The support you see here reflects the strong grassroots presence of the party,” he said.

“With God on our side, we will reclaim Creek Haven, the seat of power in Bayelsa State.”

He commended former Nyesom Wike for what he described as effective leadership within the party and also praised the state governor, Douye Diri, for maintaining a peaceful political environment for all parties.

Turnah added that officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) monitored the congresses, while delegates from all 105 wards across the state gathered at their respective local government headquarters to participate in the exercise.

The newly elected PDP chairman in Ogbia LGA, Ofoni Morgan, described Bayelsa as a stronghold of the party and pledged to mobilise support ahead of future elections.

“Ogbia and Bayelsa State have always been loyal to the PDP. We will ensure the party retrieves its mandate and takes back the state,” he said.

Party officials said the congresses were part of efforts to strengthen internal cohesion and grassroots mobilisation ahead of upcoming elections in the oil-producing state.
